Acclimatization day in Dingboche

Breath of the mountains and panoramas of the Himalayas

Yoga and breathing practice open our day, filling it with calm. Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an important part of preparation for further ascent. According to mountaineering wisdom – “Climb high, sleep low.” Each ascent to altitude helps the body better adapt to the thin air, making sleep below more comfortable and healthy. This process significantly facilitates overcoming the altitude and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

We will walk through the picturesque village of Dingboche, enjoying the warm smiles and hospitality of the locals. As we climb higher, we will see how the landscape gradually changes. Green meadows give way to harsh rocks and rocky mountains. The views of the surrounding peaks, such as Ama Dablam and Lhotse, create a breathtaking panorama. The grandeur and beauty of these mountain ranges enhance the feeling of unity with nature.

Into the Wild: Trekking to Island Peak Base Camp

The day begins with a challenging ascent as we set out on a steep trail leading to the Island Peak Base Camp. First, we climb south before turning east to follow the main line of the valley. As we continue, the trail becomes more pleasant, following a streamside and offering a peaceful atmosphere amidst the rugged terrain. To the southeast, the route to the Amphu Labtsa pass lies in the distance, but we stay focused on our goal. Ascend to Imja Tse and back to Imja Tse Base Camp (6189 m)

The Summit Push: Conquering Island Peak

We rise early at around 12 to 1 am, fueled by excitement and determination as we prepare for the summit climb. After a hearty breakfast, we begin our ascent from the base camp.

The climb starts with a gradual ascent, leading us several hundred meters beyond the base camp before we strike off onto a steep hillside. Initially, the path is sandy, but it soon transforms into grassy terrain and then into a rocky, boulder-strewn route. As we continue, the trail narrows, and we enter a steep rock channel. Although not technically difficult, we will need to climb several short rock steps before emerging on the right side of the gully.

The route then follows a ridgeline that leads to an exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. At this point, our experienced guides will fix ropes where necessary, ensuring our safety as we navigate the challenging terrain. A steep snow slope then leads us onto the summit ridge, where both fixed ropes and man-ropes are employed for added security. The length of the fixed rope is typically 350 meters, though this may vary depending on crevasse formations at the time of the season.

We will encounter two crevasses, approximately 3 to 4 meters long, which we will cross using ladders. With careful teamwork and focus, we make our way through these obstacles, until finally reaching the summit. Once at the top, we take a moment to soak in the breathtaking panoramic views, capturing photos to remember the extraordinary achievement.

After celebrating our success, we’ll begin our descent, returning to the Island Peak Base Camp where our team awaits.

Reserve day: A Day for the Unseen & Unexpected in the Himalayas

Reserve Day: A Day for Rest and Recovery

In the mountains, as in life, not everything goes according to plan. Day 15 is reserved for unforeseen circumstances—whether due to weather delays or altitude-related challenges. If the weather prevents us from reaching the summit of Island Peak or if any members of the group feel unwell due to the high altitude, we will stay at the Base Camp for the day. This time will be used for rest and further acclimatization.

This day serves as an opportunity to ensure that everyone in the group is in top health and prepared for the climb ahead. Resting and recovering properly is essential for the success and safety of the entire group. With safety and well-being as our top priority, this day provides flexibility in our schedule and helps mitigate any potential challenges.
